Marathon and Heat - The IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011

There are many factors that affect the result of the Marathon, the physical, mental, and emotional. The worst factor not controlled by the human body has to be the heat. The high temperature and humidity makes it very difficult for athletes to regulate their body temperature. Therefore, marathoners are making desperate efforts to control and endure the increasing body temperature during the event. There are still few means how to control the body temperature.



So, if the Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature index (WBGT) considering the heat with temperature and humidity is higher than 28, marathon event will be halted. At the end of the Marathon event, in some cases the hydration levels can degrease almost 3.5kg by water loss. This water loss will stress the heart and increase the body heat. So, the supply of adequate hydration is essential during the competition. Usually the athletes drink lots of liquids during the Marathon. It is extremely important to keep the level of hydration just during the competition. Not to too much noir too little.






The Marathon gear such as uniform and cap is mainly white which reflects the heating sunlight away from the body. This detail is very important during the Marathon. The white uniform also removes efficiently the body sweat so the athlete shouldn’t “carry” his sweat while running. These means can improve significantly the athlete’s performance.
