The oldest athletic event, 200 metres - The IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011

The 200 meter running event is considered to be the oldest athletic event. The first Olympics began early 700BC. The stadium length was in that time 192 meters.

The 200 meter track has two different sections, straight line and curve. In the curve area the athlete should tilt his body 12° when passing curve track.

Now days the 200 meter track has a curve and straight line, but there was a time that the 200 meter track was only straight. While recording the running event, the record is measured two times, the straight section and the curve section. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has recognized only the curve course records since 1968.

There was a time when the 200 meter sprinter was faster than 100 meter sprinter. The sprinter was Michael Duane Johnson who ran world record in 200 meters in 19.32 seconds. This means that the average of 100 meter was 9.66 seconds. This record was 0.18 seconds faster than 100metre world record holder,  Donovan Bailey(CAN)’s record of 9.84 at that time.

But later on Usain Bolt broke the world record. Hi set the record on 100 meter as 9.58 second in IAAF World Championships in Berlin 2009.
